I wanted to create a birthday gift for my partner that reflected a meaningful aspect of our relationship. I wear a ring in the shape of a sea turtle, and when my boyfriend and I first starting spending time together, he would always look at my ring and say, "it hasn't swum away yet!" As we started seeing each other more frequently, he began saying, "I won't swim away yet" to mean, "I will stay by your side."

I created this during the earliest phase of the pandemic, when we were shocked at how quickly school and work had been shut down. There was uncertainty regarding what the rest of my medical school experience would look like, but I can always find certainty in the drawing process and in gifting art to those I love.
