Each painting was a gift for a friend. In the long isolations of the pandemic, I turned to painting to stay connected. Whether on canvas or watercolor paper, they're flat and fairly easy to ship. "Katie" and "Sari" were Christmas presents when I wasn't able to travel for the holidays. "Regis" is for a friend's new baby. "Bear" is a beloved dog, a pet that a friend of mine lost in December. "Ana" was for a friend to celebrate her move to a new home. I lost my mother early in the pandemic--not to covid, but to another long illness. I wasn't able to be with her in her final days nor travel for her funeral. Painting became an effort to build something beautiful out of great loss.
