The Callback album art

Bill Hart-Davidson

This is image is album art for a five song EP that I recorded with some friends. It shows detail of a bicycle drive train, specifically the crank and chainwheel and chain guard. The chainguard is painted purple and has the words "The Callback" where the bike model would be. This is the name of our band and also a name of one of the tracks on the EP.

We released our EP this year on several streaming services, so we needed album cover art to go with it. I took the original photo of this bike on the MSU campus. For this piece, I cropped and edited the original, boosted the color saturation, and added our band name so that it looked integral to the bike.

The songs on the record all have some elements of reflection and the whole thing reflects a desire for human connection, something the pandemic taught us to avoid ever taking for granted if we had become accustomed to doing so. The whole project - album, art, all of it - helped me find something that wasn't just work to do while being at home. I felt very fortunate to be able to keep working. But I also had to consciously work on NOT working every waking minute because there was no longer any boundary between home and work. Making music and making a record definitely helped with that as it was immersive and creative without being all about my job.
