Item description
An oil painting on canvas depicting a surreal underwater creature, with one large tentacle that breaks off into smaller, spindly tentacles. The tentacles are a light blue color with a white underside. Encompassing the tentacles is a red mass filled with numerous bubbles in a multitude of blue, purple, white, red, and orange. The bubbles are clustered together organically, leaving space for the deep black of the sea to show through, almost like the bubbles are being gathered by the creature.

Soul Catcher-Day 72
This painting was created 72 days after the initial public awareness programs. Just days before I had seen a medical worker run into a dollar store and purchase all of their disinfectant hand gels. I didn’t realize when I made the painting I would lose my father to complications of Covid-19 on January 2, 2021. The public reports likened Covid-19 deaths to drowning. This is why I chose a surreal underwater creature to be the soul catcher. The bubbles represent the souls of those lost to Covid. At the base of the painting is a circle of people holding hands. There is one space left open. I didn’t know it would take my father.
