A quilt depicting an intricate story, hanging up on a white wall. The quilt is made up of various patterned fabrics, mostly different types of floral prints. It is divided into four story blocks. At the top of the quilt is a white strip of fabric with black text: “Once upon a time people with disabilities faced obstacles.” Underneath the text are two story blocks, the one to the top left inspired by the fairytale “Jack and The Magic Beanstalk”, and the top right inspired by “Cinderella”. Underneath the two blocks is text on a white strip of fabric that reads: “Once upon a time is now”. Below are two more story blocks, the bottom left inspired by “Snow White” and the bottom right inspired by “The Steadfast Tin Soldier”. At the very bottom of the quilt is text on a white strip of fabric that reads: “And they’ll live happily ever after when barriers are replaced with support and equity”.

Once upon a Disability

Once upon a Disability" is a story quilt illustrating some of the inequities that people with disabilities face whether there is a global pandemic or not. This piece was done as part of my Disabled Artist-in-Residency at Main Line Art Center in Haverford, PA and is now part of the Center's permanent collection. I worked under the mentorship of Jessica Curtaz who introduced me to the concept of story quilts. The quilt is fabric collage with some fabric marker and mono print.

The text lines read: "Once upon a time people with disabilities faced obstacles." "Once upon a time is now." "And they'll live happily ever after when barriers are replaced with support and equity."
