Rays In Time of Darkness 2

Niladri Mahajan

I did some photography, which I clicked during my travel during pandemic. During this covid situation, I'm homebound and so it's very much easy to me take up again my passion for drawing.

All of my creative outputs during this pandemic are outcomes of my lifelong philosophy which I absorbed from Indian Advaita Philosophy, psychology, science and of course my strong attachment with fine and applied art, poetry, music, photography and films. I used the negative situation of pandemic to nurture all of my creative self and positive output. My all creative works here, are a call for back to the essence of very basic of life.

Self-Portrait (Feeling Discombobulated)

Self-Portrait (Coming Undone- Rice Paper Variation)

A series of images displays the sequence of a rice paper mask crumbling away from a woman’s face. In the first image, the artist holds a gray rice-paper mask over her face. Throughout the series of images, she presses the mask to her face repeatedly as the mask crumbles into smaller and smaller pieces. It crumbles away at her touch, even as she attempts to hold it to her face. Throughout the series, the mask becomes more fragmented. In the last image, the mask falls away displaying the artist’s face.

Origami Self-Portraits

A series of twelve photographs displaying a woman wearing origami sculptures as partial masks. The sculptures include paper cranes, frogs, boxes, cootie catchers, and butterflies. Each origami sculpture is printed with a photograph of one or more of the artist’s facial features. She holds the masks so that the printed feature covers that portion of her face.

Self-Portrait (Body Language)

A compilation of several photographs in a four by four grid taken during the artist’s performance with 'skin' suits (tan body suits). The artist’s body is obscured by a black bodysuit, which blends into the black backdrop seamlessly. She poses dynamically, draping the tan body suit over herself, creating twisted, abstract poses. These poses express movement and gestures, reminiscent of letters in a written language. Attached to some of the poses, and detached from others, are paper mache masks of the artist’s face.

Covid Series 6

An empty hospital bed. The blankets and pillows are moved and bunched up on the bed, like someone had just gotten out of them. The bedside table to the right has papers, styrofoam cups, and a small fruit cup.

Covid Series 7

An aisle of a grocery store, the white shelves are completely empty. The aisle on the other end of it has mostly filled shelves.

Covid Series 8

Urgent Revolution 1
