Item description
An acrylic painting of a skyline rooted in red lines of muscle fiber swirling up to a blue sky against a glowing orange backdrop. At the bottom of the spiral, the skyline is white on a black background, and further up, the skyline is white against the overall orange. The dark red of the muscle tissue grows smaller and smaller into the center of the spiral, where there is a circle of blue sky with puffy white clouds.

The Fibres of Our Being 1
Mehdia Hassan
I created this work to better reflect on and understand the ways in which the pandemic has changed the meaning of community. I used visual metaphors to demonstrate the need for social support and community connection, in maintaining our wellness during the pandemic; I was reflecting on the experience of delivering virtual arts programming for youth; I was fascinated about the paradox of staying physically apart, but emotionally and mentally close. I was also reflecting about the challenges of staying hopeful about the light at the end of the tunnel, especially when I had really felt hopeless during the lockdowns.
