State of the Nation

I uploaded a fraction of the total works I've created during the pandemic, as art has been my one true vice and coping mechanism, and I've created something nearly every single day since COVID-19 hit the US.

Each piece has varying themes, stories, mediums, and purposes, but are united by three things that earmark my experience through the pandemic (1) my desire for escapism (2) the collective societal angst and feeling of obligation to capture the times and (3) the desire to spread joy and give back in small ways.

State of the Nation (Acrylic on linen statue of liberty painting): I felt the tensions and suffering from the pandemic, when coupled with social unrest and a polarizing bigoted president really came to a head on election night 2020. I painted this while anxiously watching CNN election coverage, channeling the feeling of hopelessness for our country if we were to be stuck with another toxic 4 years.

The pandemic experience only made the feelings of loss and loneliness develop quicker and deeper but also provided the space to lean into the loss and work through it thoroughly without the opportunity for distraction to take it's place. If it wasn't for the space provided by the pandemic, I don't think I would have been able to process grief as well as I did.

The Path (Still)

To the Terrace

To Mend a Broken Heart 1

Angel of the Pandemic: Dear Lord, I am Tired

Ink and acrylic on canvas. The piece depicts a gray colored angel, turned to the right side and holding their chest, their wings angled downwards. The angel looks upwards with their eyes closed. Surrounding them are blots of blue paint and ink in different shades.

Someday We'll Dance

Acrylic on a black canvas. The outline of a person wearing a beaded necklace and a dress is done in white. The top of the dress is a solid purple while the bottom of the dress is done in a pour so different shades of purple and white overlap each other.

Hanging on or Letting Go

Breaking Free

AHISTORIC WALK

On a light tan paper background, painted footprints of all different sizes cover the piece in a darker tan-gray color. The footprints do not overlap and are turned to the left and right, following no specific path.

Make a Wish

Nancy Rose Blvd.

QUARANTINE

The Vibrant Village 1

A brightly colored abstract painting, acrylic on wood panel, inspired by the city of San Antonio.
