Campfire 3

Cynthia Cooley

In Pittsburgh, I paint the fiery interiors of steel mills. I wanted to show this same heat and energy in Campfire 2 and 3. In Campfire 13 my husband watches the fire with the full moon across the bay beyond. Campfire 10 is my son, the guitarist, leading the singing with my granddaughter. Campfire 14 is my daughter and daughter-in-law enjoying wine around the fire. Campfires 9 and 11 are granddaughters toasting marshmallows. Campfire 12 shows my 3 granddaughters celebrating July 4. In all these, I recreate happy memories of pre-covid times. Staying home during the pandemic led me to reflect on all the family gettogethers I had expected to continue.

The pandemic experience only made the feelings of loss and loneliness develop quicker and deeper but also provided the space to lean into the loss and work through it thoroughly without the opportunity for distraction to take it's place. If it wasn't for the space provided by the pandemic, I don't think I would have been able to process grief as well as I did.

The Path (Still)

State of the Nation

To Mend a Broken Heart 1

Angel of the Pandemic: Dear Lord, I am Tired

Hanging on or Letting Go

Breaking Free

AHISTORIC WALK

The Vibrant Village 1

Throughout the piece are webs of organic, sometimes violent-looking scribbles and lines. The lines are all textured chalk, but vary in color, thickness, shape, and size.

In each painting, dark blue and purple waves bump into other cascading paints. Other colors present are dark orange, maroon, bright white, pink, and yellow. Five of the six paintings are also covered in a layer of small yellow spots. Black paint fills the gaps.
